Finishing SSYC’s Trim

Sunset Shores Yacht Club (SSYC) needs a trim. On May 17, 2016 we’d like volunteers to help us finish edging SSYC’s property. If you can help us out, please plan to be there at 10:00am. Also, if you have your own trimmer, please bring it to help speed up the process.

Leading the project is Operations Director, Stan Musial. If you have any questions, please contact, Stan.

Theft of Dock Boxes

We are receiving reports that several dock boxes have gone missing. Slip #2 had their dock box taken. We are looking for information concerning anything someone may have seen regarding people that appear to be working on a dock box at the club. At the time of this write-up, we are trying to get confirmation as to whether or not other boxes where stolen or just removed by the owner. It appears slip #88 has had their box removed.

Please check your slips to see if your dock boxes have been taken. If you find that they have been stolen, please file a police report and let us know too. This will help us to get more regular patrols of our area. As always, keep a look out for anything strange or just doesn’t feel right and report it to a SSYC Board of Director member. Call the police if you believe a criminal act is taking place.

Anyone with information about the missing dock boxes, please report it to, Kris Martek, Director of Violations (734) 495-0766 or any SSYC Board of Directors member. All our contact information is on the website. We appreciate any help you may give on this matter.

Shareholder’s Renting Slips…use an SLA

If you plan to rent your slip, make sure you have your renter sign a “Slip Lease Agreement” (SLA). We’ve added a SLA document to our “Documents & Standards” section of the website to help our shareholders and our renters. When entering into any type of rental arrangement you should ensure that you have a valid contract to outline your rights and responsibilities as a landlord or a tenant. This helps both parties to understand what is expected when renting a slip at Sunset Shores Yacht Club (SSYC).

This SLA document helps you by providing the essential ingredients to the arrangement. However, bear in mind that all shareholders and renters are conducting a private transaction between themselves and SSYC has no responsibilities or obligations to the rental agreement. The shareholder is ultimately responsible for the conduct of the renter since, per our By-Laws, SSYC only recognizes the shareholder. The renter is a guest on the property to SSYC. By using the SLA agreement, it helps both parties to protect themselves from issues that may crop up.

The SLA document is available to download in both PDF and Microsoft Word format (in case you would like to edit the document for a specific need). The document is meant only as a guide and is strongly recommended to all shareholders that want to rent their slip.

Disclaimer: SSYC has provided the SLA as a curtesy and claims no legal obligations whatsoever to the parties attached to the SLA agreement.

DOCK RAISING TIME

As most of you know, our volunteers (both shareholders and renters) and have been very busy this year keeping YOUR yacht club in first class shape and saving us thousands of dollars. Some of the projects completed to date include:

  1. Several areas of rip-rap wash-out repairs (5 days)
  2. Spring work party
  3. Weed and insect spraying
  4. New concrete foundation for the flag pole
  5. New lighting and landscaping for the flag pole
  6. Buildings power washed and windows cleaned
  7. Contracting out and overseeing work by outside Contractors

Our volunteers are the same 20-30 people that are there for every project and we still have more projects to complete this year.

As per SSYC rules (see below), it is necessary to maintain a standard distance from the bottom of the dock to the water to avoid ice damage to the dock. This elevation is set at the SSYC Gin Pole Dock. Your dock must be as high or higher as the SSYC Gin Pole Dock.

SUNSET SHORES YACHT CLUB ASSOCIATION RULES Rule 21 states the following:

To avoid ice damage each dock minimum height level must be at or above the club’s (gin pole) dock by the second Saturday of October. The Board of Director’s shall set the club’s reference dock by September 15th for a minimum of 18” above the water level.

It is time that our Shareholders step up and help us to accomplish this seasonal requirement. On the following dates we will be having work parties to raise docks.

  • October 3 at 10:00am
  • October 10 at 10:00am
  • October 17 at 10:00am
  • October 24 at 10:00am

If your share’s dock is listed as too low, you or a representative must be there to help; even if you cannot raise your dock, you can help out with other things while working with our volunteers.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SIGN IN. If you or your representative does not show up on one of the listed dates, you will be charged $50.00 per share.

If you choose to raise your dock prior to these dates, Dock raising and lowering procedures are available on our website’s Documents and Standards page or link directly to Dock Raising-Lowering Instructions.

Upon completion, please put your name and share number in the Fleet Captains’ box (located in the hall between the clubhouse and bathhouse on the East side) to ensure you receive proper credit.

Share docks that need raising are:

Community and Common Room Usage

SSYC’s Community Room is there for the enjoyment of our members, renters and guests. During recent cleanups of the room, a significant amount of dog hair and human hair trimmings have been found on the floor – an unsanitary condition that cannot continue. Per SSYC by-laws, no pets are allowed inside the Community Room or any SSYC rooms at any time. While this rule has not been strictly enforced in the past, it will be going forward effective immediately. It is the responsibility of all members and renters to use the Community Room in an appropriate manner, and to return the room to a clean and sanitary condition after using it. Any observations of improper use of the Community Room and SSYC property should be reported to a member of the Board of Directors immediately. We appreciate your cooperation.

Shirts and Pennants Ordered

Folks that ordered the new SSYC shirts and pennants will be happy to learn that they are ordered and should be available in the time that it takes the manufacturer to supply them. No fixed date yet because the supplier does them custom for each order and it’s a specialty item. Just be patient since our Commodore, Bill, has done his part; now it’s up to the supplier. If these new items prove to be a big hit, they may become available in our website store. We base what we sell there on the likelihood that people will want it so stay tuned for future updates.

Boater’s Party Big Hit & Big Fun

The annual boater’s party was a big hit this year with a 1960’s theme and lots of great food and beverages. Boaters brought many delicious dishes to past leading to plenty of food and desserts for all. If you went away hungry, that was on you. There was music and dancing and many prizes that were won from the boater’s 50-50 raffle but the high light of the evening’s activities was the costume party. The top spot went to Ed & Nan Turner for their fantastic 60’s themed costumes. Congratulations to Ed & Nan and a big SSYC thanks to Diane Brown and the many helpers for bringing in another successful boater’s party.
