GREETINGS FROM THE COMMODORE
Bill Roberts

I would like to welcome all of you to SSYC summer of 2010. As the new Commodore I look forward to working with the membership and the Board of Directors to maintain our club’s high standards. Please stop by slip 105 with comments, suggestions or just to say Hi!!

On a more serious note, I read an article in BoatUS about a swimming accident in Oregon. It was a hot day and kids were swimming in a marina when one of them started to have problems. He was wearing a type II PFD life jacket. It turns out that a stray electrical current from one of the boats was in the water. Unfortunately, eight year old Lucas Ritz was electrocuted. You can read this tragic story at: www.boatus.com/seaworthy/kritz.asp.

A related article, also published in BoatUS, Seaworthy, “Electricity and Drowning, Swimming at a Dock can be Dangerous” can be read at www.boatus.com/seaworthy/electric.asp

This can happen with any boat. Also, current can get in the water by letting your shore power cable hang in the water. So please think about the dangers that lurk beneath.

The Power Squadron will be conducting a Vessel Safety check at SSYC on June 12, 2010, at 10 A.M.

Have a safe summer & hope to see you soon.

Bill

25th ANNIVERSARY

Sunset Shores Yacht Club was incorporated July 16, 1985. To celebrate our 25th year as a yacht club we’re having a party at the SSYC community room at 2:00 PM on July 24th. The tent will be set up for protection from the weather. Food and soft drinks will be provided. Cost is $4 for adults, children 12 and under FREE. RSVP to any board member.

OPERATIONS
John Cederstrom

The club experienced a couple of problems this past off season. Someone cut the fence near the exit gate to gain entry to the club. We strongly suspect it was ice fishermen for easier access to the basin. In another incident someone cut the lock hasp off both grill storage areas and stole 5 propane tanks. Again, we suspect ice fishermen for their heaters. It’s always the few that give the rest a bad rap. If anyone has any spare tanks (with either new or old valve) that they would like to donate to the club it could save us some significant money in purchasing replacements. If so, let any board member know. The board has opted to install an alarm system on both buildings with monitoring during the off season.

We have had problems the last few years controlling the ant population. We had ant control chemicals applied 4 times last year-twice in late May and twice in late June. We are trying the same 4 applications this year but they’ll be applied in late June and late July when it’s hotter. Green Valley is using the strongest chemical permissible but with our sandy soil and activities that include beer, pop and barbeque sauce it makes our club a haven for the ants and very tough to eradicate. We’ll keep an eye on it.

We need cooperation from members and renters to refrain from using the laundry and/or maintenance rooms for storage of personal items. It can create great difficulty handling maintenance problems due to the already limited space in these rooms.

Our buildings are in need of new shingles so we are in the process of obtaining quotes for both shingles and steel.

Share your Hailor with your renter(s).

GIN POLE

To use the gin pole, contact Dennis Albee, Bill Salisbury, or Deb Salisbury. Dennis can be reached at 989 835-6847. The Salisbury’s can be reached at 989-662-2218. Please plan ahead and give them at least 2 days notice.

SURVEY SAYS

Forty six members of Sunset Shores answered the call to volunteer to help with club projects. Thanks for responding so fast and enthusiastically in support our club. The SSYC Board of Directors has commissioned a Member Participation Committee (MPC) chaired by Tom Pomerville.

The charter of the MPC is to prioritize a list of club upgrade/maintenance activities and organize volunteers to complete them. The MPC has met and prioritized a list of activities.  Now the fun part ... organizing volunteers to take action. You will be contacted by an activity leader to ask for your help.

As best you can please support these activities with your time and skill.  First priority is to be safe and second is to have fun, followed by a close third, which would be to complete the task!  If we all pitch in a little we can have a huge impact.

EXTRA KEY – OLD KEYS

If you need an extra key, contact Colleen Brandy. She has been a member of Sunset Shores since 1994 where she was first a renter who enjoyed the club so much that she purchased her slip in 1999 and became a Board Member in 2000. From Colleen: As a board member, Vice-Commodore, Commodore and now as Treasurer, I still enjoy the very friendly atmosphere of the Club. I’m an accounting professional with 25 years experience and have been sailing for over thirty years. I’m in slip #2 if I can be of assistance to any Club member.

Please drop old keys in boxes in bath houses.

OIL BOOM

The club has 40’ of oil boom (4 boxes) stored in the east grill storage area. These boom sections are to be tied end to end with a small overlap to contain and absorb the spill around a boat or boats or across the waterway as we did with our first spill 2 seasons ago. We also have a box of oil absorbent pads stored in the west maintenance room. Contact any board member for access. These pads are used to float on the surface of the spill to absorb oil.

Please, insure your bilges are clean and that oil and other pollutants are not pumped overboard by the bilge pump. Oil releases, no matter how small, are required by law to be reported.

NEWS AND REMINDERS

ANTI-SIPHONING DEVICES

Please do not remove the anti-siphoning devices from the hose hook ups. They are required by law to be there.

DOCK BOXES

Please level up your dock boxes. Besides being unsightly, many are collecting rain water and providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

DOCK MODIFICATIONS

Modifications to your docks must meet club standards which require you to fill out a form to make those modifications. If your modifications are above or below the club standards then a variance must be applied for via a variance form, (See Tom Duch for forms). Owners please inform your renters of this requirement.

BIKE RACKS

Please use the racks and do not store bikes in the laundry rooms or back rooms of the bath houses.

NO FISH GUTS IN THE DUMPSTERS

Please, the dumpsters are not emptied often enough to make large deposits of fish guts in the dumpster acceptable.

BoatUS

Sunset Shores Yacht Club is a BoatUS cooperating group (Group ID Number: GA82524Y). SSYC currently has 14 members who have enjoyed half-price BoatUS memberships. BoatUS represents recreational boaters by working on Capitol Hill, ensuring safe boating and clean water for generations to come and by resolving Member disputes with boat dealers or manufacturers. BoatUS provides valuable benefits and services to keep you safe both on and off the water. Join BoatUS now.

HIGHLIGHTS OF ANNUAL SHAREHOLDERS MEETING
Vicky Sowden

There was a terrific turn out for the 2010 annual shareholders meeting on April 24th. The community room was Standing Room Only!

Robert Huber explained that in May of 2009 we petitioned the Michigan Tax Tribunal to protest the taxable value of SSYC ($1,052,560) assessment by Bangor Township. Robert, along with various Board Members, researched the sales prices for any shares transferred in the past 5 to 6 years. This resulted in the township and our board agreeing to a reduction of the 2009 taxable value to $800,000 and the taxable valuation for 2010 of $805,100. Thanks Robert for your excellent leadership on this issue.

Members need to remember: Dogs must be kept on a leash and droppings picked up. Also, children must use life jackets on club property.

BCYC has extended an opportunity for SSYC to use their club restaurant.

Clean - Up followed the meeting with John Cederstom heading the essential projects. Picnic tables were placed around the club. Grills were power washed and reassembled. This year, there was excellent response by club members to assist.

HELP US SAVE

Your board of directors is conservative with your annual dues and makes every effort to keep expenses to a minimum. We realize the importance of keeping the membership informed. The costs of printing and postage for the Hailor could be reduced by delivering it via email. If we have an email address for you we will also send this Hailor electronically. If you would like to help us save a tree and a few bucks, send an email to hailoreditor@sunsetshoresyachtclub.com. This way we will have your accurate address.

FLEET CAPTAIN
Stan Musial

Welcome to all new and returning boat owners!

I have the job of keeping all the Current Mooring & Insurance information up to date for the Club. Whether you dock your boat in your slip or rent out your slip, please make sure that I get copies of a CURRENT Insurance Policy (with $300,000 minimum liability) and a completed Mooring Form before you put a boat in your slip.

If you or your renter has an Insurance Policy that expires during the current boating season a copy of the updated Insurance Policy with new expiration must be turned in to me. (A copy can be put in the Fleet Captains box by the Meeting Room/West Side.)

If you want to list your boat for Rent/Sale you If you want to list your boat for Rent/Sale you can contact me @ 989-893-8763 or fleetcaptain@sunsetshoresyachtclub

DREDGING
Dennis Albee

This is the latest information on dredging I received from BCYC's Commodore Greg Horvath on 5/12/10.

After reviewing the soundings, their dredging committee decided there was adequate water depth and therefore no dredging would be necessary. Greg said the soundings showed close to 6 feet from the Saginaw River to their North Basin entrance and the channel width was also good.

Having been through there with Snowbird on a day with a moderate SW wind and the water level down from the current level by approximately 6 inches, I agree with BCYC's decision. Snowbird draws 5 feet and I did not feel the keel touch even once. The shallowest area is located a couple of docks west of BCYB's North Basin entrance. The depth in that area was roughly 5 feet when I came in and runs for about 100 feet. Again I did not feel my keel touch in this area.

SHORE POWER CORDS

For safety reasons, improper power cords should never be used. Power cords to provide shore power to individual boats must be of sufficient size to support the current rating of the breaker at the post and also must be grounded to reduce electrical shock hazards and prevent possible galvanic corrosion. Power cords must also be capable of withstanding the wet environment normally associated with marine use. Therefore, all power cords supplying power to boats in Sunset Shores Yacht Club must be three-conductor #10 marine grade AWG wire with insulation designed for use in wet environments. Where two cables are spliced together an approved marine grade connector must be used.

A cable not meeting this specification should never be used to connect shore power to your boat even for short periods of time and must not lie in the water at any time.

Thanks to the Hailor team:

Steve Parkhurst, Ray Weber, Jan Yarbrough,
Tim and Linda Evans, Ryan Ruszala, and Lori Karnath
